Flowhush vs Better Stack heartbeats

Updated · 4 min read

Pricing, failure reporting, payload checks, on-call alerting and status pages compared, plus when Better Stack is the better pick.

Better Stack is an observability platform: uptime monitoring, heartbeats, on-call and incident management, status pages, logs, metrics, error tracking and more. Its heartbeats are one feature among many. Flowhush only does heartbeats, aimed at automation workflows and AI agents, with checks on the output of each run. If you're choosing a heartbeat monitor, here's how they compare. We make Flowhush. Better Stack facts come from their pricing page and docs as of November 2026, linked below.

The short version

  • Better Stack suits teams that want heartbeats inside a full incident-response setup: on-call schedules, escalations, phone and SMS alerts, status pages, and logs in one place.
  • Flowhush suits people running n8n, Make, Zapier or AI-agent workflows who want to know both that a run happened and that its output was usable, at a flat monthly price.

Where the difference matters

Incident response

This is Better Stack's strength. A missed heartbeat opens an incident and follows your on-call escalation: the person on call gets a push notification, then a phone call, and the alert escalates if nobody acknowledges it. The pricing page lists unlimited phone call and SMS alerts among heartbeat features. Flowhush sends one notification to your chosen channels when a monitor goes down, and one when it recovers. It has no acknowledgement, escalation or phone alerts. If a missed job should wake someone at 3 a.m., Better Stack is built for that and Flowhush isn't.

Checking what the run produced

Better Stack lets you send a job's output with a failure (curl -d "$output" .../$?) so responders can see what went wrong. The job decides whether it failed.

Flowhush can make that decision from the output itself. That matters for workflow tools and LLM steps, where the run usually thinks it succeeded:

# Better Stack: the script decides; exit code and output are reported
output=$(./sync.sh 2>&1)
curl -fsS -m 10 -d "$output" "https://incidents.betterstack.com/api/v1/heartbeat/YOUR-HEARTBEAT-TOKEN/$?"

# Flowhush: post the result, and the monitor's rules decide
curl -sS -m 10 -X POST -H 'Content-Type: application/json' \
     -d '{"summary": "", "tickets": []}' https://flowhush.com/p/YOUR-MONITOR-UUID
# → OK (recorded as failure: Missing or empty JSON key: summary)

The Better Stack URL format follows their heartbeat docs. Copy the exact URL from your heartbeat's page.

In n8n, the Flowhush version is one HTTP Request node: Method POST, URL set to the ping URL, Send Body on, Body Content Type JSON, Specify Body Using JSON, JSON {{ JSON.stringify($json) }}, with On Error set to Continue in Settings. On the monitor, set Required JSON keys to the fields your downstream steps rely on.

Simplicity

Better Stack is a large product, and heartbeats sit next to on-call calendars, log pipelines and dashboards. That's an advantage if you'll use them, and overhead if you won't. Flowhush has a single dashboard of monitors, a pings history, and alert channels.

When to choose Better Stack

  • You need on-call scheduling, escalation and phone/SMS alerts for missed jobs.
  • You want status pages, uptime checks, logs or error tracking in the same tool as your heartbeats.
  • You have 10 or fewer jobs and want them monitored free.
  • You manage infrastructure with Terraform and want monitors in code.
  • You need maintenance windows or Microsoft Teams alerts.

When to choose Flowhush

  • Your jobs are n8n, Make or Zapier workflows or AI agents and you want to fail runs whose output is empty, not valid JSON, missing required fields, or contains phrases like "I'm sorry" (Team).
  • You want flat pricing for many heartbeats: 50 for $12/month, unlimited for $29/month.
  • You want start/finish tracking to catch runs that hang, with durations recorded.
  • Discord or Telegram are where you want alerts.

Flowhush's Free plan covers 5 monitors with no credit card. Add a heartbeat to one workflow and see whether its output checks catch anything your current setup misses.
